Shaftesbury has a wildness to it in winter which makes you feel truly alive. The wind whips through, dramatic fog can linger all day, and the snow, if it comes, is often deeper than in the surrounding lowlands.
You might not think this sounds especially appealing, but with so many cosy cafés and pubs to retreat to, we promise it can make for a wonderful winter experience.
Whether you’re out pacing the lanes or heading straight for a squishy sofa beside a roaring fire, here are five new reasons why we think winter is a great time to visit Shaftesbury:
1.
To visit FOLDE Dorset’s new shop. Long-time friends of ours, Amber, Karen and the team at FOLDE are expanding into a second shop space. A true haven of nature writing, art, ceramics, jewellery and outdoors equipment, everything in FOLDE is carefully chosen. Winners of Independent Bookshop of the Year for the South West in 2024, their expansion speaks to their well-earned and deserved success.
2.
For the stark views and big skies. The landscape feels more exposed in winter, with views opening up as the trees lose their foliage. The town stands on a hill and is surrounded by banks of other peaks and ridges, so there are plenty of ways to get fresh air into your lungs. With many chalky paths, even the muddiest winters are manageable and you can quickly clock up the miles.
3.
For a cold swim at Shaftesbury Lido. The only open-air swimming pool in Dorset is here, and during winter they hold bracing cold-water swimming sessions. Bring a flask and a bobble hat!
4.
Another mover-and-shaker in the independent shop scene of Shaftesbury The Kitchen Table’s new shop is now just three doors up from us. Be sure to stock-up on inspiring cookbooks full of hearty winter dinner ideas.
5.
If cold-water swimming fills you with dread, then perhaps we could recommend a cosy matinee movie at The Hilltop Cinema. Showing old favourites, new releases, children’s films and more niche choices, there is something for everyone. Tickets are affordable and the surroundings are comfortable and relaxed.
