Wood-Fired Mugs by Seren Birtles
Seren Birtles is a ceramicist working locally at Ridge Pottery in Somerset. Using Somerset clay that she sources and processes herself, Seren creates pieces that are beautifully reminiscent of the landscape around her. We love her thoughtful approach to materials, and are delighted to be stocking a selection of her work.
Each mug is wheel-thrown before being carefully glazed and decorated by hand. Seren uses a range of locally sourced and reclaimed materials in her process, including rice ash and recycled newspaper offcuts which gives the surfaces a subtle texture and depth that feels both natural and distinctive. The glazes themselves are unique to Ridge Pottery, hand-mixed by Seren to achieve their soft, earthy tones.
Once decorated, the mugs are fired in a wood kiln. A particularly lovely detail is in the handles, which are thrown on the wheel rather than pulled - an unusual technique that gives them a lightness and a comfortable, balanced feel in the hand.
Please note that due to the hand-made nature of these mugs, slight variations of size, colour and markings are to be expected.
Please note that due to the handmade nature, these dimensions are approximate and may vary slightly. Height: 11cm, Width without handle: 8cm, Width with handle: 11.5cm
