From a kitchen table sideline to an established part of the local community, the team now pour, pack and despatch thousands of candles each month. Based in Shaftesbury, Dorset, our business spans a busy bricks and mortar shop, a bustling online studio managing customer orders, a fragrant workshop, and a network of nearly 200 stockists.
First steps
In 2014, Amalia and James began making natural wax candles in reclaimed vessels. Alongside their day jobs, they spent evenings and weekends attending local markets and running a small Etsy shop. Late nights packing orders and hurried trips to the Post Office after work slowly laid the foundations for The Botanical Candle Co., turning a side project into a growing business.
A lucky chance
By early 2018, we had outgrown the attic bedroom and needed more space. We found a light, airy first-floor studio on Shaftesbury High Street and set about turning it into the perfect candle studio.

Taking a gamble on bricks & mortar
At a time when high streets across the UK were facing uncertainty, we decided to take a chance and open a shop on the ground floor of the building we had moved into a year earlier. Just a few steps from the famous Gold Hill, and buoyed by strong support from the local community, it felt like a risk worth taking. We are pleased to say that since opening in 2019 the shop has become busier and busier, with thousands of visitors each month coming to discover all that Shaftesbury has to offer.
