This rectangular room above our high street shop has been many things over the last 5 years. Workshop, shop, packing room, office - it's done it all. If you follow us on Instagram you may have caught us talking about the challenge of heating this space, in the autumn of 2022. With rising electricity costs starting to bite, we were staring down the barrel of £1,000+ heating bills per month over the winter. It wasn't an option, so we decided to jiggle things around and make space for the despatch team in our office/meeting space.
We had every intention of using the now empty studio as overflow packing space in the run-up to Christmas. However, a bitingly cold November and December quickly put paid to that plan. Meaning this lovely place had been sat empty over the winter looking rather sorry for itself. Original single glazed windows made it impossible to keep any heat in the building. We were at a loss as to what to do with it.
Thankfully in early spring of 2023 and the owner of the building generously agreed that the windows did need an upgrade if we were to keep this charming building in good condition. With the online team happily settled in to their new zone it didn't make sense to go through all the upheaval of moving them again - new windows or old. We put our heads together and all agreed that an extension to the shop was the obvious calling.
Our little shop has been plenty of space for us, especially over the turbulent last few years. Looking ahead though, it seems that more and more people are looking for an immersive shopping experience, rather than just a transaction. We're a bunch of tactile people ourselves, so we totally understand the desire to touch, smell and try-out products. The joy of browsing!
With an ever-growing 'little black book' of makers, artists and designers we often struggle to fit everything we'd like to in the shop. So the thought of many square metres of new retail space was too tempting to resist. As spring slowly crept over the countryside we donned the overalls and dug-out the paint rollers.
On Saturday 10th June we opened the doors to a queue (!) of excited visitors! It was a thrill to see people discovering the new shop space. Everybody has been incredibly generous with their feedback and many gorgeous things have found new homes this last week or so.
